Prospects of Adventure (Music: Tim Hunter, Lyrics: Frederick McKinnon) LET PROVIDENCE AND FORTITUDE BE THE WINDS THAT FILL MY SAILS TO ACHIEVE MY LIFE’S AMBITION AND LEAD ME ON GREAT MISSIONS AS A YORKSHIRE FARM BOY ROSEBERRY TOPPING I WOULD CLIMB TO VIEW THE SEA BEYOND THE SHORE OTHER WORLDS MEANT TO FIND A TOILING VILLAGE SHOP LAD WITH TEEMING OCEAN NEAR I’D SENSE A PASSION IN MY SOUL AS SAILORS’ TALES I’D HEAR Goddamit! It’s time to be master of my fate. ON WHITBY SHIPS I’LL GO TO SAIL THE GREAT NORTH SEA I’LL STUDY SEAMANSHIP AND STARS THERE’S SOMETHING CALLING ME LET PROVIDENCE AND FORTITUDE BE THE WINDS THAT FILL MY SAILS TO ACHIEVE MY LIFE’S AMBITION AND LEAD ME ON GREAT MISSIONS LIFE ON LAND IS NOT FOR ME I WANT TO BE FREE I CAN SEE . . . PROSPECTS OF ADVENTURE PROSPECTS OF ADVENTURE LET PROVIDENCE AND FORTITUDE BE THE WINDS THAT FILL MY SAILS TO ACHIEVE MY LIFE’S AMBITION AND LEAD ME ON GREAT MISSIONS PROSPECTS OF ADVENTURE PROSPECTS OF ADVENTURE

Life on the Ocean Wave (Lyrics from a poem by Epes Sargent ; Music: Tim Hunter) A LIFE ON THE OCEAN WAVE! A HOME ON THE ROLLING DEEP! WHERE THE SCATTERED WATERS RAVE AND THE WINDS THEIR REVELS KEEP, LIKE AN EAGLE CAGED I PINE ON WHITBY”S FAMILIAR SHORE, OH, GIVE ME THE FLASHING BRINE, THE SPRAY AND THE TEMPEST’S ROAR! WITH COMFORT AND SAFETY GONE WE SET SAILS UPON THE YARD TO TRAVEL THE GREAT BEYOND OUR COURAGE AND STRENGTH UNMARRED WE’LL VISIT FOREIGN DOMAINS WITH VIGOR AND GOOD CHEER BUT OUR LONGINGS WILL REMAIN TO BE ON OUR SEA SO DEAR

Loyalty and Love (Music: Tim Hunter; Lyrics: Frederick McKinnon) I’VE SURVIVED GREAT BATTLES AND FOUGHT THE RAGING SEA BUT NEVER GAVE MY HEART TO A LASS SO DEAR TO ME. AT THIS TIME IN MY LIFE I SHOULD BE A MARRIED MAN I WOULD LIKE A WIFE AND CHILDREN WILL SHE GIVE ME HER HAND? IN A WORLD OF CHANGING FORTUNE TWO THINGS DO ENDURE LOYALTY AND LOVE LOYALTY AND LOVE I’LL PLEDGE MY HEART FOREVER OF THAT I CAN BE SURE LOYALTY AND LOVE LOYALTY AND LOVE I’VE NOT BEEN VERSED IN ROMANCE WILL I KNOW WHAT TO SAY? HOW CAN I LET HER KNOW I CAN SEE OUR WEDDING DAY? (ELIZABETH enters and approaches JAMES.) ELIZABETH A little early for dinner, Mr. Cook. Father said you were in this morning to have a talk with him. Will you have your usual ale? JAMES No thank you, Miss Batts. Hot tea will be fine. I ONCE KNEW LITTLE SWEET BETH AS ONLY A DARLING CHILD BUT NOW SHE’S A WOMAN TODAY MY HEART’S BEGUILED I’VE NOT BEEN VERSED IN ROMANCE BUT I WILL KNOW WHAT TO SAY AND I MUST LET HER KNOW I CAN SEE OUR WEDDING DAY I’LL PLEDGE MY HEART FOREVER OF THAT I CAN BE SURE LOYALTY AND LOVE LOYALTY AND LOVE

about

To mark the 250th anniversary in 2018 of the first of Captain James Cook’s three historic Pacific voyages, which commenced at Plymouth in August 1768, Frederick McKinnon and myself, Tim Hunter, decided to create a new, shortened, 90 min version of our longer musical play. We decided to call this new play 'Captain Cook’s Journeys'. This new version of the play has fewer songs, and two new songs plus some lyric changes to songs from the original play.

For the first time all the songs from the new play are available on one CD. The new play also features a song ('Too Soon') written by Hawaiian composer John Saclausa.

Not only does the story highlight the importance of Whitby to Cook’s early years and his life-long friendship with Quaker ship-owner Captain John Walker but it also seeks to engage the audience by depicting many of James Cook’s great accomplishments as an 18th century explorer and man of the Enlightenment. The central dramatic arc of the piece traces the great captain’s historical and emotional path from his aspiration to sail North Yorkshire colliers to his tragic murder by natives on the shore of Kealakekua Bay in Hawaii. Additionally, the loving and sometimes conflicted relationship between James Cook and his wife, Elizabeth, is touchingly rendered in stirring scenes and songs (“Distant Hearts”, “So Long Gone”, “I Am the Man I Have to Be” and “Too Soon”). And, the joy, hardships and spirit of late 1700s seafaring life is captured in “A Life on the Ocean Wave”, “Ice Islands” and “Land Ho!”.
