Moorland Drifters (Music and Lyrics: Tim Hunter) We’re Moorland Drifters, drifting by Like the clouds drift across the sky Take my hand and we’ll fly Stay together and never say goodbye May your spirit stay with me Cathy we’ll be finally free To walk across the windswept moors As we did so many years before We’re Moorland Drifters, drifting by Like the clouds drift across the sky Take my hand and we’ll fly Stay together and never say goodbye Through the dark and stormy gales We’ll cross the hills and walk the dales To the highest mountain peak There we’ll find the path we seek We’re Moorland Drifters, drifting by Like the clouds drift across the sky Take my hand and we’ll fly Stay together and never say goodbye

A Woodland Prayer (Hear us Oh Lord) (Music Tim Hunter © 2020, Lyrics: traditional) Hear us, O Lord, and have mercy, because we have sinned against Thee. To Thee, highest King, Redeemer of all, Do we lift up our eyes in weeping Hear, O Christ, the prayers of your servants. Hear us, O Lord, and have mercy, because we have sinned against Thee. Hear us, O Lord, and have mercy, because we have sinned against Thee. Right hand of the Father Our corner-stone, way of salvation, gate of heaven, Hear, O Christ ,wash away our stains of sin. Hear us, O Lord, and have mercy, because we have sinned against Thee. Hear us, O Lord, Hear us, O Lord Hear us, O Lord, and have mercy, because we have sinned against Thee.

Alcuin Of York (Lyrics and Music Tim Hunter) Old Wine Of Ancient Learning Old Wine Old Wine Of Ancient Learning Old Wine In the morning, at the height of my powers I sowed the seed in Britain Now in the evening when my blood is growin' cold I'm still sowing in France Hoping both will grow, by the grace of God Giving some the honey of the Holy Scriptures Making others drunk on The Old Wine Of Ancient Learning He became a scholar at the Carolingian Court Invited by Charlemagne He became famous for his teachings and his thoughts Soon everyone knew his name Alcuin Of York, Alcuin Of York, Alcuin Of York, Alcuin Of York Eternal Light, shine into our hearts, deliver us from evil. Eternal Power, be our support, scatter the darkness and ignorance. Care for the soul more than the body, The former remains, the latter will perish. Let us drink The Old Wine Of Ancient Learning He became a scholar at the Carolingian Court Invited by Charlemagne He became famous for his teachings and his thoughts Soon everyone knew his name Alcuin Of York, Alcuin Of York, Alcuin Of York, Alcuin Of York Alcuin Of York, Alcuin Of York, Alcuin Of York, Alcuin Of York Alcuin Of York

Castle on the Crag (Music and Lyrics Tim Hunter © 2020) Castle on the Crag, Castle on the Crag Where the Ravens Roam is a castle that old King John called his home in Knaresborough he sang lots of songs Castle of the Crag where we still Fly the Flag. Castle on the Crag, Castle on the Crag King John went hunting in the forest of Knaresborough to slay the beast, bring it home for a feast, In the Castle on the Crag, Castle of the Crag where we still Fly the Flag, Castle on the Crag, Castle on the Crag. This is a Royalist Town, Parliament gonna take our castle down, don’t trust those who preach equality, no we’d rather keep the monarchy and stay free. Can we keep the tower? So, in our darkest hour we can Fly the Flag, on the Castle on the Crag Castle on the Crag, Castle on the Crag No parliament is gonna take this town again, we’ll remain true and stand our ground, on the Castle on the Crag, Where we still Fly the Flag Castle on the Crag, Castle on the Crag

Mother Shipton (The Dragon's Tail) (Music and Lyrics Tim Hunter © 2020) For storms will rage and oceans roar Earthquakes will split the plain to shore, And fiery dragons cross the sky Six times before the earth shall die All signs of mankind's fall and decline The Dragon's Tail will cross the sky And then the earth will die Those were the words of Mother Shipton That's what she prophesied And when the Dragon's Tail is gone Man tries to carry on But it’s too late to escape our fate. We should have listened to Mother Shipton And before the race is built anew, A silver serpent comes into view And spews out men of like unknown To mingle with the earth now grown All signs of mankind's fall and decline The Dragon's Tail will cross the sky And then the earth will die Those were the words of Mother Shipton That's what she prophesied And when the Dragon's Tail is gone Man tries to carry on But it’s too late to escape our fate. We should have listened to Mother Shipton Tim Hunter © 2016

House of Rock (Music and Lyrics: Tim Hunter © 2020) Turn back the clock, and live a life of old In a House of Rock and Roll Take a stroll down Abbey Road, see the cave where St Robert saved his soul, And the tree sculptures watch you walking by, To the Chapel and House carved in stone so high Walk up to the castle and see the view in the market place, Blind Jack is sat next to you Turn back the clock, and live a life of old In a House of Rock and Roll. Don’t let the storm take its toll, Live in a House of Rock and Roll Cross the bridge and see the Dropping Well Where old Mother Shipton used to dwell, See the cave where so much was prophesied and take a look at all that has been petrified Walk up to the castle and see the view in the market place, Blind Jack is sat next to you Turn back the clock, and live a life of old In a House of Rock and Roll. Don’t let the storm take its toll, Live in a House of Rock and Roll Tim Hunter © 2016

about

Yorkshire Through The Ages II

**October 2023 Update**

This is the second volume of Tim’s musical tour of England’s largest county, Yorkshire and its History and Culture.
This collection features 10 songs covering many people, places and events from the 4th to the 19th centuries.

The album starts off ‘Moorland Drifters’, a song inspired by ‘Heathcliffe and Cathy’ from ‘Wuthering Heights’ written by Yorkshire novelist Emily Bronte.

Then we have 4 songs about the development of Christianity in the region:

‘Constantine’ - about the Roman Emperor who took the throne while in York in AD 306 and later converted to Christianity and effectively established the Roman Catholic Church. (The cover of 'Yorkshire Through The Ages II' is, in fact, a picture of a statue of Constantine situated in front of York Minster).
‘A Woodland Prayer’ – inspired by the 13th century Hermit and Saint, St Robert of Knaresborough
‘St Hilda of Whitby’ – about the pioneering 7th century Abbess who helped found English Christianity
'Alcuin Of York' - was a scholar, clergyman, poet, and teacher from York. He was born around 735 and became the student of Archbishop Ecgbert at York. At the invitation of Charlemagne, he became a leading scholar and teacher at the Carolingian court. He was considered to be one of the most important intellectual architects of the Carolingian Renaissance.
Then there are four songs about famous people and places from the historic town of Knaresborough, probably the most important town in Northern England in the earlier part of the last millennium:

'Castle On The Crag' Knaresborough famous 12th Century castle where King John spent a lot of his time.
'Mother Shipton' the legendary 16th century Knaresborough prophetess
'Blind Jack' about the pioneering 18th century Knaresborough Road Builder
'House Of Rock' about a distinctive house carved out of the rock face on a crag in the 18th century in Knaresborough

As with YTTA volume 1, we finish with a songs about the 19th century industrial revolution.

‘Captains Of Industry’ about the 19th Century Benevolent Capitalism pioneered by two famous Yorkshire Industrialists: Titus Salt (of Saltaire) and Joseph Rowntree (of York).
