about

More and more people were becoming aware of the horrors of the slave trade, but, the trade was so lucrative and such a major part of the economies particularly of sea ports like Bristol and Liverpool, that there was a strong support for it in Parliament. Despite the brutal and inhumane nature of the trade – the assumption was the abolition was inconceivable. Wilberforce then met Thomas Clarkson, in 1787 and Clarkson persuaded Wilberforce to spearhead the campaign for abolition in Parliament. Clarkson toured the countryside giving speeches and gained support, carrying with him diagrams of slave ships showing the overcrowded conditions plus examples of the cruel shackles used and African cloths and arts. This was a dangerous activity, though, Clarkson was threatened and attacked in Liverpool whose economy was dependent on the trade.
In this song Clarkson persuades Wilberforce to campaign in Parliament to end the Slave Trade.

lyrics

Break The Chains
You’ve got the money, you’ve got your fame
You’ve got the contacts, let’s start a campaign
Let’s get together and stop this this stain
Let’s all work togther and fight this shame

Let’s Break The Chains Break The Chains
Let’s Make the Change , Make the change
Let’s Break The Chains Break The Chains
Let’s Make the Change , Make the change

You’ve been elected, but you need an aim
You are respected, so use your name
Let’s all get together and stop their games
All because the people want their sugarcane

I’m travelling across this land canvassing for support
To end this evil slavery it’s the noblest cause we’ve fought
