about

We can only speculate about early Yorkshire history, as written records didn’t begin until the Romans arrived, in 71AD. In their chronicles, they acknowledged that the Druids were leaders of the pre-Roman religious order. Yorkshire was part of the ancient kingdom of ‘Brigantia’, which stretched across Northern England, from the Irish sea to the North Sea, covering the majority of land between the River Tyne and the River Humber. Brigantia’s capital was Aldborough (now in North Yorkshire), though it was referred to as Isurium in Roman times. The Brigantes defied the Romans, but eventually, their territory became occupied.

lyrics

Brigantia (Music and Words Tim Hunter)

We worshipped nature all alone
Worshipped in the morning sun
Surrounded by standing stones
In a green and peaceful land
In an unspoilt natural world
We worshipped the sun, the moon, the stars
Nature made us what we are

Then invaders came and set our culture aflame
Subjugated us, imposed their will
But they couldn’t kill our spirit, that remains
So we made a stand, to defend our land
We became Brigantia
Any soldiers who are slain
Will not have died in vain
We’ll not end up in chains
The North will rise again
Hear our battle cry, we will do or die

Brigantia! The Kingdom of the North
Brigantia! The Kingdom
of the North
Brigantia!

Victory is ours if
we only believe
In Brigantia
