The rugged coastline of North Yorkshire has claimed many a vessel, but one of the coast’s most famous shipwrecks was a Russian vessel called the Dmitry, from Narva. The ship, which carried a cargo of silver sand, ran aground on Tate Hill Sands, which is below East Cliff, Whitby. Bram Stoker, the author of Dracula, seemingly inspired, wrote about the Demeter from Varna, which brought Dracula to Whitby and which carried a cargo of silver sand and boxes of earth.
