Wilberforce had become MP for Yorkshire which would elevate him to being one of the most prestigious members of parliament. He read a book which was to influence him for the rest of his life ‘The rise and fall of religion in the soul ‘by Philip Dodderidge. Wilberforce had ‘got religion’ and told William Pitt The Younger (a close ally of Wilberforce) that he intended to resign from public life to pursue his newly found religious beliefs. Pitt retorted that a Christian life should produce action rather than mere meditation.
