The ongoing campaign was slow and difficult and, often produced accusations of hypocrisy because Wilberforce as a member of the establishment and was supportive of repressive measures following the infamous Peterloo massacre – where protesting workers had been shot.
The government were very fearful of a revolution – which had happened in the US and then Paris – many thought London would be next. The following is a conversation between Clarkson and Wilberforce. Many believed that compassion should begin at home. In this song Clarkson is arguing for revolution, but Wilberforce will have none of it.
