Following the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, Yorkshire, subject to punitive harrying from the North, saw great hardship. Later, however, under the rule of the English King John, one town found favour: Knaresborough. At the time, Knaresborough was probably the most significant fortified town in the North of England. In 1205 King John took control of its castle. He considered the castle to be a place of strategic importance (and especially useful when it came to controlling rebellious northern barons) and spent £1,290 on improvements. King John also instigated one of the country's most ancient national traditions in the town: The Royal Maundy, where monarchs present gifts to the poor. The name ‘Maundy’, and the ceremony itself, derives from an instruction, or mandatum, of Jesus Christ at the Last Supper: that his followers should love one another.
