about

Following the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, Yorkshire, subject to punitive harrying from the North, saw great hardship. Later, however, under the rule of the English King John, one town found favour: Knaresborough. At the time, Knaresborough was probably the most significant fortified town in the North of England. In 1205 King John took control of its castle. He considered the castle to be a place of strategic importance (and especially useful when it came to controlling rebellious northern barons) and spent £1,290 on improvements. King John also instigated one of the country's most ancient national traditions in the town: The Royal Maundy, where monarchs present gifts to the poor. The name ‘Maundy’, and the ceremony itself, derives from an instruction, or mandatum, of Jesus Christ at the Last Supper: that his followers should love one another.

lyrics

Maundy Money (Music and Words Tim Hunter)

(Chorus) Maundy Money,
For the ordinary people
Maundy Money, A gift from King John
Maundy Money, For the ordinary people
Maundy Money

In April 1210
King John was in residence
At Knaresborough Castle
King John provided clothing to paupers
Then on Good Friday he fed a 1,000 of us
Maundy Money, A gift to the poor
Of Knaresborough, The first King to Give
Maundy Money, A gift to the poor of
Knaresborough

Chorus

We must love one another,
We’re all sisters and brothers
We must love one another,
We’re all sisters and brothers

Maundy Money,
A gift to the poor of Knaresborough
The first King to Give Maundy Money
A gift to the poor, of Knaresborough
Maundy Money For the ordinary people
Maundy Money
A gift from King John, Maundy Money, for the ordinary people, Maundy Money
