Despite the occupation of Brigantia, Roman civilisation had little impact on Yorkshire people. Resistance continued,though; legend suggests that the Roman 9th Legion was annihilated during a rising of northern Brigantean forces against the Roman ‘Superstate’. By the 4th century,
Roman civilisation was in decline, and the last Roman soldiers left Britain in 407AD, their way of life practically eradicated in Yorkshire. A distrust of external authority,though, has remained in Yorkshire ever since.
