A nice walk which takes in all the spectacular Geological features of the Castle and Crag starts on Abbey Road, with the first port of call being St Robert’s Cave.

The remains of St Robert’s Cave and chapel are a rare example of a medieval hermitage, cut out of magnesium limestone bedrock. The Constable of Knaresborough Castle granted St Robert a piece of land and he lived in the Cave for the rest of his life, gaining many followers.

Walking further along Abbey Road you will see impressive tree carvings near the Crags.

Further along you can see the early 15th century Chapel of Our Lady of the Crag, which is an early 15th century chapel cut out of the sandstone of the river gorge cliff face.

The House in the Rock is a fascinating local curiosity. Thomas Hill and his sons in the
1790s cut this house out of the rock face and built a wall in front to create four rooms
on top of each other.

Further along Abbey road is the Bunker's Hill Quarry - which is now a caravan park confined within the crags of the old quarry, which must have supplied many thousands of tons of high quality Magnesian Limestone for buildings in the town and elsewhere.

Eventually crossing over to Waterside you will pass the old Castle Mill which is now converted to flats. It was built in 1791 as a cotton mill and soon became the centre of the town's most thriving industry, the linen trade. Linen was woven in this mill until 1972.

You will finally reach the imposing view of Knaresborough Castle which was first built by a Norman baron in the 12th century on a cliff above the River Nidd.

In 1205 King John took control of Knaresborough Castle. The castle was taken by Parliamentarian troops in 1644 during the Civil War, and largely destroyed in 1648.

From the Castle you will see the spectacular view of Knaresborough's viaduct Railway bridge, one of Yorkshire's most famous views.
