The story starts at an important moment in Charles Dodgson's life, as recorded in his diaries for 1855. His diary entry for Jan 1 : The year begins in Ripon, tried a little mathematics unsuccessfully – sketched a design for the illumination in the title page of my sister’s book of sacred poetry. Handbells in the evening…

Dodson was set up for life: had just graduated at Oxford and been given a lectureship in Mathematics. Only the previous year (1854) he’d had his first publications in the Whitby Gazette, had attended a two month revision school to prepare him and others for his finals and reportedly told stories to children on the beach. He still wanted to write, though and find time for fantasy.
