Seafaring introduced another activity that had nothing to do with the ideals of exploration: smuggling. In the late 17th century, into the early years of the 18th, there was a brisk export trade in wool; as a result, many sheep were snatched from their contented grazing on the lush Yorkshire Ridings. As the century wore on, ships crossing to Holland returned loaded with tea, gin and brandy. Because Britain had many military commitments (including the American War of Independence), the government hiked up taxes; many civilians had little inclination to pay, which meant smuggling thrived. Robin Hood’s Bay, with its rocky coves and caves, became a centre for this illicit activity. And it wasn’t just ordinary folk who came for contraband…

The Smuggler’s Way (Robin Hood’s Bay)
(Music and Words: Tim Hunter)
Bring the contraband ashore
They sailed across the windswept North Sea
To bring us tea, gin and brandy
With black sails, undercover of night
They waited offshore for the lantern light
Then, when the coast is clear
The signal brings them near
None for the revenue
And more for me and more for you
Bring the contraband ashore
Forget about the things you saw
It’s the Smuggler’s Way
Down at Robin Hood’s Bay
The Smuggler’s Way
At Robin Hood’s Bay
Brandy for the vicar
And baccy for the clerk
It all comes in undercover of dark
Don’t question what you see,
or things you thought you saw
Just let the men go by
and don’t you ask no more
Then, when the Coast is Clear
The signal brings them near
None for the revenue
And more for me and more for you
Bring the contraband ashore
Forget about the things you saw
It’s the Smuggler’s Way
Down at Robin Hood’s Bay
The Smuggler’s Way
At Robin Hood’s Bay
If you wake at
midnight and hear some people’s feet, Don’t draw back your curtain and look into the street.
Don’t ask no questions and you’ll be told no lies, Look the other way my friend, let the gentlemen go by
Bring the contraband ashore
Forget about the things you saw
It’s the Smuggler’s Way
Down at Robin Hood’s Bay
