Our journey begins in North Yorkshire—in the Dales, near Horton-in-Ribblesdale. Here, we encounter the first of Yorkshire’s ‘Three Peaks’, Pen-y-ghent. This is the smallest of the peaks, standing at 694m (2,277 feet) high. The name Pen-y-ghent may mean 'Hill on the Border’, ‘Hill of the Border Country' (Celtic) or even 'Hill of the Winds' (Welsh). According to the Yorkshire Dales’ National Park Authority, the peak’s “stepped, domed outline dominates the surrounding landscape and has led people to describe it as a crouching lion or the prow of a boat”. The Yorkshire Three Peaks’ Challenge incorporates Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, typically in this order. Those taking on the challenge usually take around 12 hours to complete it; on one occasion, when tackling the Three Peaks, I completed it in 11 hours.
