The North Sea houses a rich catalogue of various sea creatures, including whales. Whaling was a major industry of Whitby for 100 years, signified today by the huge whale’s jawbone archway on Whitby’s West Cliff.

Whales were used to make a variety of products, such as oil and soap. Thankfully, this dangerous and cruel activity ended during the late 19th Century; whales are now a protected species in most parts of the world. Sadly, whaling considerably reduced the numbers of these fascinating creatures, though they can still be seen on North Sea boat trips. Whales are intelligent creatures with large brains; some species communicate using melodic sounds. This piece features whale sounds from the public domain.
