about

Yorkshire Day is celebrated on 1 August; a central tradition is the reading of the Yorkshire Declaration of Integrity, which confirms Yorkshire's foundation in 875AD (as ‘the Kingdom of Jorvik’, by the Viking chief Halfdan Ragnarsson), and asserts the inviolability of its ancient boundaries. Yorkshire Day was initially celebrated in 1975, by the Yorkshire Ridings Society, in Beverley, as "a protest movement against the Local Government reorganisation of 1974”. Earlier re-organisations had seen Middlesborough (close to Captain Cook’s birthplace) removed from Yorkshire. 1 August is also the anniversary of the emancipation of slaves in the British Empire in 1834, for which a Yorkshire MP, William Wilberforce, had successfully campaigned.

lyrics

Yorkshire Day (Music and Words Tim Hunter)

Yorkshire, Yorkshire Day
Yorkshire, Yorkshire Day

From the moorland way to the smugglers bay
People always mean what they say
It’s the Yorkshire Way
And it came to be,
God’s own country
In 875 AD
So this is Yorkshire Day

Yorkshire, Yorkshire Day
Yorkshire, Yorkshire Day

These three ridings will never be divided
All those who are born therein or resident and loyal to the ridings
Will be Yorkshiremen and women

Lord take us to the Broad Acres
Where the White Rose grows

From the fields of Green to the coastal scenes
People always say what they mean
It’s the Yorkshire Way

Yorkshire, Yorkshire Day
Yorkshire, Yorkshire Day
