Britain pressed on with its quest for total abolition

It was not until the Slavery Abolition Act 1833 that the institution was finally abolished in the British empire. On Friday 26th July 1833 Wilberforce received news that his abolition of slavery bill requiring the end of slavery throughout the whole of the British empire had passed.

Wilberforce, who had laboured for nearly 50 years on this issue, knew at the very end of 73 years and eleven months of his life that his goal had been accomplished. Sadly two days later on Monday 29th July he died.

Fellow abolitionist campaign John Newton wrote a hymn 'Amazing Grace' which was first performed in 1773, 250 years before this album's release date.

This is a version of 'Amazing Grace', featuring two verses taken from the hymn,

Amazing Grace how sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now I'm found I was blind but now I see

Now I see, Now I see

'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed

These verses are taken from 'Faith's Review and Expectation',which has come to be known by its opening phrase, "Amazing Grace". John Newton wrote the hymn and it was published as part of the Olney Hymns in 1779 and first performed in 1773.
