Although frequently invaded by sea in earlier centuries, Yorkshire started to become increasingly adventurous itself in seafaring terms. For instance, in 18th C, James Cook, rose from humble Yorkshire origins to become a major figure in the Age of Discovery. He changed our maps, history and perception of the globe. During the Age of Discovery, particularly the 18th century, extensive overseas exploration became a powerful factor in the spread of European culture and globalisation. This opened up trading routes, and dispelled many myths about the earth, including the theory that it was flat.
